Unprotected Views

London’s visual appearance is partly defined by twenty-seven ‘Protected Views’ which protect and manage landmarks and vistas which are considered to be of strategic significance to the image of the city.

This work is intended as a provocation - an alternative set of protected views of London. They work within the same categories and technical criteria as the existing protected views, but articulate strategic elements of the city which are absent from the current views.

They invite the viewer to look beyond the assumptions we bring to different view types, and instead look deeper into how a city is articulating concerns about its image and identity through the objects and vistas it chooses to protect.
